distant shores, Op. 8
Originally comissioned as one movement of a set of miniatures, this piece belongs to a collection of pieces by mutliple compoers on the theme of nostalgia. In reminiscing on this theme, memories from childhood of the beach came to mind. Of the distant call of waves, the parallel motion each set followed in, crashing onto the sands one after another. This became the inspiration for the siren-like calls of the vocals, and the powerful yet subdued tone of parallel fifths sliding up and down the strings, with an incredibly slow bow pressure to softly brush the hints of sound across the strings.
